Few areas display the resurgence of post-fire Chicago like the Gold Coast. In 1874, construction was completed on founder of Northern Trust John DeKoven’s North Dearborn mansion. The 15,000-square-foot space was witness to generations of Chicago’s finest gatherings. Bought by the Biggs catering family in 1949, the home was designated on the Gold Coast Historic District National Register in 1978. Through a painstaking $4 million restoration, developer Fred Latsko captured the prominence of the original property while outfitting the space to the height of modern technology. The first phase of the Biggs project, Biggs Cigar Emporium, is now open.
Located in the garden level of the mansion, Biggs Cigar Emporium complements its historical setting with a retail space, smoking lounge, and private humidor lockers available for a yearly license fee. Characterized by a discerning staff whose personal relationships, past and present, reflect every aspect of the industry, several walk-in humidors feature cigars from every established label alongside boutique blends and the finest lines of smoking accessories.
It is too often the case that high demand and hasty consumption deny cigars their proper aging. At Biggs a great emphasis is placed on seeking out rare product, be it at auction or in tucked away locales. Our aim is to relieve our patrons of this search by maintaining a healthy selection of rare and vintage cigars. At the head of these efforts is Director of Retail, Rhoda Bogardus. With over 35 years in the business, Bogardus has cultivated trusting relationships through travel, sales, and blending with the likes of Henry Kellner, Paul Garmirian and Rocky Patel.
Biggs Cigar Emporium is proud to be the first commercial installation in the United States to utilize the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NSIT) compliant Havana Controls humidification and monitoring system.
The Havana Controls’ approach emphasizes moisture content over relative humidity. Moisture content is comprised of humidity, temperature and airflow with the last element as determinative; [explanation]. Modern hygrometers mislead by providing a base reading of humidity and temperature without technological regard for airflow. a [twenty-five year project], determined that cigars are housed best at a moisture content of 13%. This atmosphere is optimal for a cigar’s burn, flavor, and aroma.
Havana Controls Founder Michael Legary has designed a humidification and monitoring system which maintains this standard to within a .5% range. Even if other modern systems took moisture content into account, it has been shown that when tested in the same environment they consistently exhibit a failure deviation of 10-20%. This technical information translates to our patrons as an unequivocal confidence in each cigar displaying its peak character.
Ashton is proud to announce that Ashton Estate Sun Grown (ESG) 22-Year Salute received an outstanding 94-rating and is the highest-rated cigar in the October 2014 issue of Cigar Aficionado.
